Movement & Impact

Movement & Impact is an installation, a massage platform on which live-bits from the traffic situation at the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland are being received and transformed into a comforting feeling.

The Gotthard road tunnel is the primary north-south route in Switzerland. It connects the north and south of Europe as well as the north of Switzerland with the holiday region Ticino. Each year a solid line of around 6 million cars, coaches and trucks pass through the tunnel causing miles of congestion.
A lot of movement takes place at the Gotthard tunnel. What kind of impact does this result in else where, far away?
The massage platform installation allows this live-traffic situation to be tangibly perceived. Live-bits with information on traffic density, vehicle size and weight are transformed into gentle quakes and sound.

The live-bits from the Gotthard tunnel can be transmitted live all over the world. The artwork demonstrates this phenomenon and questions the distribution of this digital data. In fact they are neutral, but their perception will change depending on the viewers situation.

What effect and consequence will this have, appertaining to the wellbeing of the viewer?
The platform currently stands in Linz. It is very interesting how the participants respond to it. The main reason for congestion is passenger holiday traffic to the south. The sound of cars is perceived as sound of the sea, thus those participating experience the emotional wellbeing of been at the seaside.

Moving & Memories

The Installation “Moving Memories” is concerned with Memory. The screens of the SAP-mediafaçade allow an insight of its recollections, such as: impressions, cumulations of events, things that become forgotten. All this is building up an atmosphere of the scene from the viewpoint of the façade.

Four cameras are recording the events on Rosenthaler Strasse. The façade reacts on motion. Movements become registered and then a defined section live streamed. When the motion stops, the section freezes and inserts itself into the façade. (This is an analogy to early photography when the photographed person had to stand completely still in order not to cause a blurred photo). The moment becomes a photograph and memory. People on the scene have the possibility to actively participate by posing in front of the facade. The defined sections (indicated by a frame, such as in photo cameras) follow the movements of the participators. People become part of the mediafaçade’s consciousness.

This procedure is repeating itself continuously. Memory above memory are building up the façade: An always moving picture, made of impressions and events at Rosenthaler Strasse.
